Table with cloud design
  • Carved lacquer
  • China, Ming dynasty, 14th–17th century
  • Collection of National Museum of China
This table showcases the tixi lacquer technique, which involves alternating red and black lacquer layers. The legs curved outward that converge inward at the bottom are a typical style of the Ming dynasty furniture. The top reveals the natural texture embellished with clouds, the head of Anaruddha, and vine patterns. Early examples of tixi lacquerware date back to the Song dynasty.
