Lacquerware for Tea Ceremonies

Tea consumption began in the 14th century in Japan. By the 16th century, tea drinking and appreciating tea ware became meditational rituals among urban merchants and warriors during the turmoil of warring states period. In the tea ceremonies, plain black-lacquered tea ware, modest and refined in style, was favored over more lavishing objects adorned with maki-e or mother-of-pearl inlay techniques.
