Techniques of Korean Mother-of-pearl Lacquerware
Korean lacquerware techniques like jureumjil, kkeunemjil, mojobeop, tachalbeop, and turtle-shell inlay created intricate patterns. Goryeo lacquerware features finely cut mother-of-pearl and turtle-shell embellishments. In the late Goryeo period, turtle-shell use decreased, and the tachalbeop technique that allowed bold floral patterns emerged in the early Joseon period. Kkeunemjil was applied to intricate patterns like plant stems and dense geometric designs. Goryeo's turtle-shell and metal-wire decorations were reinterpreted with the Joseon aesthetics, creating distinctive Joseon lacquerware.
