Box with cloud and dragon design
  • Lacquerware with gold inlay
  • China, Qing dynasty, Kangxi period (r.1661-1722)
  • Collection of National Museum of China
This box is painted entirely in red lacquer, with the character ‘wan 卍’ incised on the lid. The center features a forward-facing dragon bending over. The dragon’s scales are engraved, lacquered, and gilded using the qiangjin technique. Inheriting lacquerwork techniques from the late Ming dynasty, this piece originally belonged to the Qing imperial collection, showcasing the high standard of lacquerwork during the Kangxi period.
