  • Carved lacquer
  • China, Qing dynasty, 17th–20th century

In Buddhism, a balwoo bowl is one of the objects used by monks. Its round shape symbolizes the boundlessness of the Buddhist dharma. Buddhas are sitting on each of the seven lotus flowers carved on the red-lacquered surface. The seven Buddhas are the ancestral Buddhas
who appeared in the past as mentioned in Buddhist sutras: Vipaśyin Buddha, Śikhin Buddha, Viśvabhū Buddha, Krakucchaṃda Buddha, Kanakamuni Buddha, Kāśyapa Buddha, and Shakyamuni Buddha.
This piece is a typical Qing dynasty style.
