Box with chrysanthemum scroll design
  • Lacquerware with mother-of-pearl and turtle-shell inlay
  • Goryeo dynasty, 12th century
  • Collection of National Museum of Korea
This small box was initially nested within a larger box and used as cosmetic boxes. Such boxes were also crafted in celadon or monochromatic lacquerware. Today, only three of the mother-of-pearl lacquer boxes remain intact worldwide. Contrasting with
its sturdy wooden structure, this piece exudes a delicate appearance adorned with intricate mother-of-pearl, metal wire, and turtle shell decorations. It exemplifies the exquisite lacquer craft skills of the Goryeo dynasty.
