Box with peony scroll design
  • Lacquerware with mother-of-pearl inlay
  • Joseon dynasty, 17th–18th century
  • Collection of National Museum of Korea
The box is ornamented with large peony blossoms made of mother-of-pearl and intertwined peony scroll design with metal wires. Butterfly patterns placed in between add a rich and lively touch. The peony blossoms and leaves are detailed using the tachalbeop technique, which involves cracking the round raw mother-of-pearl and gluing. The technique is a uniquely Joseon style, which appeared in the early Joseon dynasty and became popular after the mid-Joseon period.
