This box was used to store Buddhist sutras during the late Goryeo period. Its wooden body is coated with multiple layers of
bone-powder-and-lacquer mixture and black lacquer to prevent warping and cracking. The regular arrays of mother-of-pearl flowers are meticulously decorated and surrounded by peony scrolls in intertwined metal wire. The bowed-edge lid, dense decorative patterns, and side handles reflect the emblematic styles of the 13th and 14th centuries.
