Inkstone table
  • Lacquerware with mother-of-pearl inlay
  • Joseon dynasty, 19th–early 20th century
  • Collection of National Museum of Korea
This elegant table with chests and drawers stored writing tools with the inkstone stored in the top section and other essential items in the middle drawer. The table is covered in a geometrical pattern made in the kkeuneumjil technique, which cuts out and glues the mother-of-pearl onto a lacquered surface. This lustrous decoration contrasts with the supplementary use of the kkeuneumjil technique from Goryeo to the mid-Joseon period. Such variation reflects a new taste of emerging affluents in favor of splendid style from the 19th century.
