Box with peony, plum blossom, and bamboo design
  • Lacquerware with mother-of-pearl inlay
  • Joseon dynasty, 17th–18th century
  • Collection of National Museum of Korea
This box features peony scroll design on the lid, crafted using the kkeuneumjil technique. Gussets are applied to the lid’s edges for tight fit. The liberal arrangement of the peony and scroll design differs from the early Joseon style. The sides depict the ‘Three Friends of the Cold Season’ (plum, bamboo, and pine) alongside bluebell flowers, reflecting the period’s popular aesthetic.
