Comb box with phoenix, flower, bird, and pine tree design
  • Lacquerware with mother-of-pearl inlay
  • Joseon dynasty, 18th–19th century
  • Collection of National Museum of Korea
Upper-class women used the box to store hair grooming tools such as combs and accessories. The top lid features a pair of phoenixes holding the herb of eternal youth. Phoenix is a royal motif associated with queens. Vibrant peony blossoms adorn the front while the sides depict birds with pine, plum, and bamboo trees. The back shows birds amidst the wildflowers. This design harmoniously blends Korean cultural motifs with folk-style imagery.
