Writing box with inkstick design
  • Lacquerware with multi-precious materials inlay
  • Japan, Edo period, 18th century
  • Collection of Tokyo National Museum
This writing box simulates an embedded inkstick on the lid. The realistic depiction of decorations enhances its authenticity: an inkstick embossed with the whetstone-lacquer mixture, a green dragon ornamented with ceramic, and a tiger\'s eyes inlaid with glass. The tiger-shaped paperweight and brush are decorated inside the lid. Haritsu Ogawa was famous for his lacquerware, influenced by the Chinese baibaoqian technique of embedding gems and stones.
