Case (inro) with sweetfish design
  • Lacquerware with maki-e
  • Japan, Edo period, 19th century
  • Collection of Tokyo National Museum
During the Muromachi period, a multi-tiered case known as inro was initially used to contain seals and ink, evolving in the Edo period to include small medicine containers.
This inro features an ojime with a wave design and a dog-shaped netsuke. Its togidashi maki-e technique depicts sweetfish rushing in waves. Over time, inro became decorative items, which reflects diverse personal tastes in the Japanese culture.
