Case (inro)
  • Lacquerware with maki-e and mother-of-pearl inlay
  • Japan, Edo period, 19th century
  • Collection of Tokyo National Museum
Typically, ojime and netsuke are created independently of the inro before being assembled. However, as seen in this piece, the ornaments were often designed as an integral part from the outset. Detailed patterns were achieved using a maki-e technique with mother-of-pearl. Intricate designs cut from thin gold sheets and bluish mother-of-pearl adorn the surface, sprinkled with gold powder. Netsuke features ornate decorations, including keys, hats, rhino horns, and precious gems.
